ALZHEIMER’S SUPPORT GROUPA new Alzheimer’s Support Group is meeting at The New Community Extended Care Center, located at 266 South Orange Ave in Newark. The free meetings are held the last Monday of the month, with the next meeting scheduled for Aug. 30. A light dinner is served.
“We feel strongly that this is a needed service for our local families, as well as our residents,” said Betty Lawson, administrator of Extended Care, a 180-bed skilled nursing facility owned and operated by New Community Corporation. “There are people dealing with all levels of dementia and we need to be able to offer them a comfortable and supportive environment in which to share their experiences and concerns,” she added.
According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is a progressive and fatal brain disease causing memory loss and problems with thinking and behavior severe enough to affect work, lifelong hobbies and social life. An estimated 5.3 million Americans are living with the disease, including more than 350,000 individuals and their care partners in New Jersey.
Laura Holly-Dierbach, vice president of programs and services for the Alzheimer’s Association, Greater New Jersey Chapter, said support groups like the one Extended Care has started “create a safe, confidential supportive environment.”
