Nearly 100 Chinese Teens to Meet with Newark Youth: Teens from Two Continents Come Together at New Community Corporation as part of Fairleigh Dickinson Program

Newark, NJ (August 9, 2011) — Nearly 100 Teenagers from China will engage in a cultural exchange with teenagers from Newark, NJ as part of Fairleigh Dickinson University’s Emerging Global Leaders Seminar on Tuesday, August 9, 2011. The events will take place from 10:30 am-3:00 p.m.

The teenagers will be visiting from China to attend FDU’s Emerging Global Leaders Seminar August 7-10, taking part in a variety of activities. The group will travel to New Community Corporation, which has been working since 1968 to help Newark residents improve the quality of their lives to reflect individual God-given dignity and personal achievement.

There, they will take part in a program that will culminate in three students from each nation speaking in front of the entire group to share information about themselves. That will be followed by an extended, informal lunch period during which the students have an opportunity to learn more about each other and develop friendships. The students will share information about each other’s culture and the Chinese students will also be treated to a luncheon buffet that includes traditional African-American dishes.

New Community Corporation is recognized as one of the largest and most comprehensive non-profit community development agencies in the United States. New Community provides services in four basic areas: housing, health care, job training and education. The organization was founded in 1968 after the Newark civil unrest.

“New Community is pleased to host such a wonderful cultural exchange between these young people from China and youth from our own NCC network,” said Monsignor William J. Linder, founder, president and CEO of New Community Corp. “Life-long memories will be created from the discussion and other interactions that take place between these dynamic groups of young people that are designed to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of each other’s culture.”

Traymanesha Moore, a graduate of the NCC Youth Program who went on to earn her Ph.D., will be a featured speaker at 10:40 a.m. Dr. Moore is now employed by Rutgers University as program coordinator of the Rutgers Future Scholars Program on the Rutgers-Newark campus.

During the morning session, students will be welcomed by NCC founder Monsignor William J. Linder and Newark Deputy Mayor Margarita Muñiz. Patrick Sciarratta, Executive Director of the Friendship Ambassadors Foundation, which promotes cultural exchanges and Dr. Jason Scorza, Vice Provost of Global Learning, Fairleigh Dickinson University will also address the students.

The Chinese students will be staying at The College at Florham of Fairleigh Dickinson University, 285 Madison Ave., Madison, NJ 07940 from Aug. 7-10.
